Health OneThe Challenge: HealthONE/HCA’s CEO offered an interesting budget equation at the first planning meeting: the art expense should not exceed the amount spent on the boardroom table. That was a first for McGrath & Braun, but when our consultants saw the beautiful table, they knew the outcome would be excellent. The Solution: Because the west side of the corporate space houses support for the three-state division of HCA and the east side hosts services for Denver-area HealthONE hospitals and clinics, McGrath & Braun chose art to distinguish and define the two. The west wing became an abstract gallery and the east wing assumed a Colorado persona. The lobby serves as a bridge, with an abstract painting leading to HCA offices and a whimsical Denver skyline leading to hospital-related resources. The boardroom brings everything into balance, with a multi-piece wood wall sculpture of the tree of life.

The Challenge: Sky Ridge Medical Center covers a 57-acre site in Lone Tree, Colorado. For this medical center, McGrath & Braun chose art that enhances wellness and healing within the parameters of a western lodge theme. With the subsequent opening of a dedicated spine and orthopedic unit on the fourth floor, the center wanted artwork that coordinated with the existing western design. An additional challenge was the sharply curved walls in the rotunda and nurses’ station. The Solution: McGrath & Braun commissioned a large three-dimensional metal and neon sculpture with a concave curve for the entry rotunda on the fourth floor. As a welcoming signature piece, the sculpture depicts the sky and ridges of Colorado. The sharply convex wall in the nurses’ station displays a large modular ceramic mural depicting the Durango & Silverton railroad line.
